Bright Blue Foods (BBF) have announced the proposed closure of Sargents Bakeries due to financial difficulties.

Sargents UK has operated in Doncaster since 2007, and is the sister company of the original Sargents, founded by a husband-and-wife team in Australia in 1896. The company produce and bake traditional products including tarts and pies.

BBF was acquired in September 2015 by the private equity investor, Endless LLP. The acquisition of Sargents was funded through existing BBF facilities.

Sargents has been experiencing significant financial difficulties, ongoing from before the acquisition, according to BBF. It added that since the acquisition, there have been several external factors outside of the company’s control which have “further adversely affected the business.”

BBF CEO Jonathan Lill said: “As a result, it is with regret that we have announced the proposed closure of Sargents Bakeries Limited.

“We appreciate that this is a very difficult situation for everyone, and we will provide as much support as possible to everyone affected.”
