McCain Foods has invested in the Netherlands-based producer of frozen foods Scelta, with the aim of expanding its presence in the global prepared appetisers market.

Scelta Products has operated in the frozen vegetable industry for more than 22 years and has worked as a business partner of McCain’s for the past 13 years.

The Dutch manufacturer produces a range of breaded, frozen vegetable-based snacks, including breaded mushrooms, onion rings and vegetable fries based on broccoli and cauliflower.

The acquisition marks the latest in a series of investments and acquisitions McCain has made in recent years to expand its appetiser and snacking ranges. Included was the purchase of Ad van Geloven, Strong Roots and Forno De Minas.

Co-founders of Scelta Products Jos Koster and Wilco Boone said: “After more than a decade of building a successful business partnership, we are thrilled to officially become part of the McCain Foods family. Our companies have grown together over the years, and I’m excited to see that continue.”

Fuelling growth and expansion

In a statement, McCain said that the investment represents a “significant” investment that will “fuel McCain’s growth and expansion” in the frozen vegetable appetiser space.

McCain added that Scelta Products onion rings, battered and breaded mushrooms and other vegetable appetisers “fit well” within McCain’s existing appetisers portfolio and will allow the brand to serve growing consumer and customer demand.

Scelta Products’ plant assets will be integrated into McCain’s product network with the intention to increase production capacity to accelerate global prepared appetiser growth throughout European and international markets, as reported by McCain.

The company have confirmed that the acquisition price is not being disclosed at this time.
