Northern Ireland veterinary professionals are considering strike action following an “unsatisfactory” pay award.

Veterinary Service Animal Health Group (VSAHG) union members will commence strike action on 30th October, lasting five days.

The BBC has reported that it is “not yet clear how disruptive the action would be”, as over VSAHG 150 veterinary staff strike at ports across Northern Ireland.

It was reported by the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) that there has been growing discontentment amongst the veterinary community in Northern Ireland as they believe they are “being side lined in pay negotiations”.

AIMS stated that the vets hope for a “fair and equitable resolution, ensuring that they can continue to provide the high standards of care that the community expects and deserves”, as a representative for the Northern Ireland Veterinary Association said: “It’s disheartening to see our colleagues in other parts of the UK being valued more than us. All we seek is fair pay for the essential services we provide.”

The FSA have been approached for comment on the situation.
