UK farmers protested in London on Monday (25th March), with more than 100 tractors leading the procession into Westminster.
Save British Farming and Fairness For Farmers organised the ‘go slow’ protest for Monday 25th March following the success of the Canterbury farmer protest in Kent on Sunday 3rd March.
Campaign group Save British Farming posted on Facebook that the protest was to “demand Government acts to stop substandard imports destroying our food security”, as around 100 tractors flew the Union flag and carried signs reading “Save British farming” and “No farmers, no food, no future”.
The protest, which saw tractors travel through central London during rush hour, highlighted the dissatisfaction felt by farmers regarding the Government’s “lack of support” for British food production.
Liz Webster, founder of the campaign group Save British Farming, previously stated: “Farming is fraught with risks: risks that have intensified every year with the climate emergency, Ukraine war and Brexit reality which has only served to exacerbate problems.
“They [Government] want to leave us reliant on food imports which are bad for public health, the environment, animal welfare and climate crisis.
“In 2019, this Government was elected with a mandate to uphold our standards and deliver a ready-made deal with the EU which would see British agriculture boom. It is now entirely obvious that they have totally betrayed us all.”
This comes as Red Tractor responded to farmer feedback on its Greener Farms Commitment (GFC) by scrapping plans to implement it.
