Ahead of the Food Management Today Food Industry Awards ceremony on 1st July, broadcaster and former Celebrity MasterChef champion Alexis Conran called for credit where it’s due.

Conran told Food Management Today about his life-long interest in food and the industry that brings it to our tables.

“I’ve always been a foodie, a food obsessive, a food geek,” he said. “Actually, there are a lot of food manufacturers out there who are also an integral part of our lives. What they manufacture and supply is what we, as consumers, end up having to work with.

“So, I’ve always been really keen to peek behind the curtain and see how things end up on our supermarket shelves, and on our plates.”

Referring to the difficulties that the food industry has faced due to Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic, Conran continued:

“It’s an important time for the industry because ultimately, it’s the furnace that’s keeping the country going. All kidding aside, when we talked about empty supermarket shelves, I think the industry really pulled together and made sure all the horrific things that could have happened didn’t happen.

“They deserve a bit of credit and if there’s anything I can do to be part of that, it’s my pleasure to do so.”

The annual FMT Food Industry Awards recognise the hard work and excellence of food processors and manufacturers across the UK food sector, as well as trade organisations, retailers, ingredients suppliers, machinery and equipment companies, people and training.
