After publishing its 10 Year Health Plan, Government has revealed its intention to scrap the advertising ban on foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS).

The HFSS advertising ban will come into force on 1st October 2025, restricting so-called “junk food” from being advertised between 5:30am and 9pm and enforcing a total ban on paid-for online advertising. It will also see rules implemented to restrict buy-one-get-one-free deals.

The ban had been delayed initially until 2022, but has continued to be delayed until 1st October 2025.

According to Government, by “introducing smarter regulation” it would be able to “repeal legislation restricting volume price promotions and aisle placement”.

The advertising ban will still be implemented, but with the expectation that it will be repealed.

Supermarkets to report on “healthy” food sales

The news comes as Government announced that food retailers and manufacturers will report on so-called “healthy” foods to “tackle obesity”, as part of its Plan for Change.

The policy will require all big food businesses to report on healthy food sales, with Government to set targets to increase the “healthiness” of sales in communities across the UK.
