As part of it latest impact report, ingredients manufacturer Macphie has revealed it has donated the equivalent to 33,000 meals and is making moves towards hitting its environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets.

In 2015, Macphie was among the first businesses to achieve B Corp status in Scotland as a result of its high standard of social and environmental performance. It achieved a 93.7 rating in their latest B Corp assessment, stating that it has taken a number of steps to strengthen standing “impact areas”.

The impact report outlines how the business has prevented the waste of 22.4 tonnes of CO2e while also donating to food waste charity FareShare, supporting over 500 charities with its food donations. Its foundation apprenticeship programme hosts local secondary schools, and Macphie has provided a university food science student with both scholarship funding and a three-month work placement.

Since 2014, two on-site wind turbines installed and owned by Glenbervie Wind have been used to power the business, and its 1.2MW on-site biomass facility installed in 2008 saw Macphie become the first food manufacturer to use this technology to produce ingredients.

An investment of £75,000 enabled the business to install a sub-metre network across the Glenbervie site. This allows Macphie to track energy use, and will aid in its goal to reduce their carbon footprint.

In partnership with the Scottish Refugee Council, the business was able to provide two Syrian refugees with full-time employment, and a winter payment scheme has been introduced to provide staff with an extra £750 to combat cost-of-living challenges.
