Steve Reed, MP for Croydon North, has replaced Jim McMahon as Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Labour’s cabinet reshuffle.

Reed entered the position after McMahon publicly resigned on 4th September, publishing his letter of resignation on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

McMahon’s letter to Keir Starmer stated: “As the reshuffle begins this week, I wanted to take the opportunity to step down from the Shadow Cabinet.

“I am proud of all the work that we have done since you became Leader to expose the Government’s failures on water quality, food security, animal welfare and a host of important environmental issues.”

Since 2012, Reed has served as MP for Croydon North, and was previously Shadow Justice Secretary since 2021.

His position as Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will see him undertaking his Governmental responsibilities in opposition to Conservative Therese Coffey.
