Amazon’s online grocery shop has announced it will price-match hundreds of Tesco products, in a bid to attract more customers amid soaring food inflation.

According to the latest ONS figures, UK food inflation has hit a 40-year high of 9.1%. The Bank of England has warned that inflation might go above 11% in the latter half of this year as rising costs of food and fuel contribute to building pressure on consumers’ budgets.

Amazon said the promotion will see reductions such as 46% off of own-brand margherita pizzas and 19% off of Cathedral City extra mature cheddar.

Director of Amazon Fresh, Russell Jones, told the PA news agency that he hoped the pricing campaign would “show how good our value is compared with competitors.”

He said: “We recognise that this is the most important thing to customers right now.”

Supermarkets Sainsbury’s and Tesco are currently matching the prices of certain grocery items sold at rival discount retailer Aldi. Asda has also extended its selection of reduced-price products, with its new Just Essentials range covering around 300 items.
