Amazon Fresh’s first UK grocery shop, which opened in Ealing Broadway two years ago, has closed.

In March 2021 the shop opened, advertised as the first Amazon till-less shop outside of the US.

Two other Amazon Fresh stores in East Sheen and Wandsworth were permanently closed on Sunday 23rd July following performance reviews.

The stores operate using a ‘Just Walk Out’ policy, with no checkout to scan your items through. Instead, the app communicates with the barriers at the store entrance so that it can tell whether a product has been moved or not by using technology similar to what is found in self-driving cars, sensor fusion and computer vision.

UK customers will still be able to shop at the remaining 17 stores, located in areas such as East Croydon, Sevenoaks, Hoxton and more.

Amazon is set to open more stores in greater London this year, implying that the store closures in London do not mean the company is finished expanding.
