Government seminar to discuss steps for developing a circular economy

Policy Forum for Wales is set to host a keynote seminar on Thursday 9th November, which will look at zero waste policy in Wales and the next steps for developing a circular economy.

The seminar, which will be held online, will feature speakers such as Andy Rees, the Welsh Government’s Head of Waste Strategy, and Keith James, head of policy and insights at the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

Speakers will discuss the Stronger, Fairer, Greener Wales innovation strategy, including implications for the waste management sector in relation to waste-avoiding business models like reusing and repairing.

Priorities for industries embarking on the transition to net zero waste will also be discussed, providing information to businesses on what is needed to enable a just transition to more circular business models.

Attendees will be given the opportunity to consider challenges facing Welsh businesses as the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging is to be introduced from 2025, with options for digital technology to facilitate resource efficiency being a key area of discussion.

Seminar topics include:

  • Investment into research on waste and resource management solutions
  • Community and industry engagement
  • Impact on businesses
  • Waste as a resource
  • Environmental impact

Other speakers include Gary Walpole, director of the Circular Economy Innovation Community at Cardiff Metropolitan University; Eoin Bailey, Celsa Steel; Cathy Cook, LARAC; Iain Cox, Ecostudio; Paul Griffiths, Monmouthshire County Council; Karolina Rucinska, Cynnal Cymru; and a senior speaker confirmed from The Royal Mint.

The seminar will be chaired by Ruth Jones, Newport West’s Welsh Labour MP.
