The British Retail Consortium has reported that UK Black Friday sales were “dampened by pre-Budget jitters”, as food sales were below the 12-month average growth.
UK supermarkets have written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves in a letter organised by the British Retail Consortium, urging her to exclude shops from the proposed business rates surtax.
Over the four weeks to 2nd August 2025, food sales increased by 3.9% on the year, according to data from the British Retail Consortium.
The Bank of England reduced the UK base rate to 4%, while stating in its Monetary Policy Report that the 2025 inflation increase was a result of higher food and energy prices.
