Major cereal manufacturer Weetabix has confirmed its intention to close one of its Corby sites and expand its other factory located in the same region.

The plan to close the site, known as ‘Weetabix One’, is said to be part of a “long-term investment strategy” in which the company intends to upgrade its lines.

It has been confirmed that some jobs could be lost as a result of the site merger, but Weetabix states that this number will be “small” and many employees are expected to be accommodated in the expansion plans.

A Weetabix spokesperson commented: “As part of our long-term investment strategy we are proposing to upgrade our hot oat cereal, flake and extruded product lines at Corby into a single modern factory on the same site. The investment will help us meet increased demand for our products and support our long-term growth.

“The plans are at an early stage and could mean the loss of a small number of roles, so we are currently evaluating options with our employees to minimise any potential impact. As and when a decision is taken, we will work closely with our customers and suppliers to keep them updated and avoid any disruption during the upgrade works.”

The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) has confirmed it is in consultation with Weetabix to about the potential closure of the Earlstrees Road site.
