In a major shake-up, Morrisons is scrapping 3,000 management roles while also creating 7,000 shop floor jobs, meaning a net gain of 4,000 positions.

As part of the restructuring, the supermarket says the new jobs will be hourly-paid roles and will be distributed across 500 stores.

The new jobs will be in customer-facing roles, such as more butchers, bakers and fishmongers.

Managers who face losing their jobs will either have to downgrade or leave the company completely, but Morrisons insists there will be a job for “everybody who wants to continue to work at Morrisons.”

David Lepley, Morrisons group retail director, said: “This proposal means more frontline colleagues improving product availability and helping customers.

“Whilst there will be a short period of uncertainty for some managers affected by these proposals, we will be supporting them through this process and there are jobs available for everybody who wants to continue to work at Morrisons.

“There will also be more roles with greater flexibility that are very attractive to colleagues with families.”
