Anne-Marie Trevelyan has been appointed as the new International Trade Secretary, while Steve Barclay becomes Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office.

Stepping into the position vacated by Liz Truss, who has replaced Dominic Raab as Foreign Secretary, Trevelyan will now be in charge of securing new international trade agreements for the UK.

George Eustice remains in his role as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, while Steve Barclay takes over Michael Gove’s former position.

Tony Goodger, spokesperson for the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS), said the association welcomed continuity at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and stressed the relevance of Barclay’s appointment for the food industry.

“This will now place him in charge of chairing the cross departmental group of ministers looking at the labour supply shortage,” Goodger said.

“We imagine that Anne-Marie Trevelyan’s move to DIT will very much be one of ‘business as usual’ simply taking the trade negotiations which we led by Liz Truss forward to their conclusion. We hope that this will mean new global markets for our members.

“It is of note that we have members in the constituency of the new Education Secretary as we did with his predecessor, but hope that we can make better headway now with our view that there needs to be a dedicated Food Manufacturing and Processing T-Level to help encourage students post-16 to make the industry their career of choice.”
