UK retailer Tesco is trialling new technology that will allow customers to checkout on self-service tills without scanning their items.

Customers at the Tesco Fulham Reach Express will be able to use the new scan-free checkouts, which will present them with a list of products they have picked up without them having to scan anything. The product list can be checked by the consumer, and will not require the use of the Tesco Grocery App to take advantage scan-free checkouts.

Tesco stated that the technology is only available at the single GetGo store in Fulham and is part of a range of checkout solutions available to customers.

Three other GetGo stores, located at High Holborn, London; Chiswell Street, London and Aston University in Birmingham, all offer the mobile GetGo option, allowing customers to pick items, scan the app and walk out. Customers also have the option to use traditional self-service checkouts or an employee-attended till.

The retailer said that customers simply need to stand in front of the till and press ‘Get Started’ before checking their items against the given list, paying with a card and receiving an e-receipt. Shoppers will also have the option to pay with cash at an attended till in each GetGo store, and Tesco colleagues will remain nearby to help customers with any issues.

Sarah Quiggin, head of Store Customer Experience at Tesco, said: “We are constantly searching for the perfect formula to make the shopping trip as seamless and convenient as possible. This trial of scan-free checkouts will add another option for customers in Fulham Reach to save time on scanning items and will reduce queuing in store.

“We will be watching closely to see how customers react to this potential new option of having a list of their shopping presented to them automatically.”
