The Food and Drink Federation’s (FDF) chief executive Karen Betts has commented on the conflict in Ukraine, warning that disruptions to the country’s exports will have an impact on global food supplies.
On Friday morning, 25th February, Russian tanks entered the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, as Moscow’s invasion of the country accelerated.
Betts claimed that global food supplies and the price of a range of “key commodities”, such as vegetable oils and maize, essential to UK food production may be impacted by the current conflict in Ukraine. She said: “This will be further compounded if there are sustained energy price rises, adding to an already troubling inflationary picture.
“We continue to watch developments closely and to work with food and drink manufacturers to try to minimise any knock-on effects for shoppers and consumers.”
