London-based Italian gelato company Hackney Gelato has raised over £670,000 through crowdfunding on the platform Crowdcube, with a view to grow the business.

Hackney Gelato manufactures traditional Italian gelato using slow churning techniques from its kitchen in East London. Founders, Sam Newman and Enrico Pavoncelli, opened the business in 2015.

Hackney Gelato’s products are stocked in retailers across the UK including Waitrose, Ocado and Tesco, and served at the restaurants Brewdog and The Ivy.

The company’s revenue has increased 46% in the last four years to a total of £2.36 million and Pembroke VCT have invested in the growing business. The company has already exceeded its target of raising £600,000 through crowd fundraising.

The money raised through this funding is intended to “double the size of [its] kitchen and warehouse, grow [its] sales team, and invest in in-store marketing and sampling to recruit new gelato lovers.”
