Global food processor Nestlé has announced that it is discontinuing its caramel-flavoured Caramac bar.

The bar, which was introduced over 60 years ago in 1959, was produced in Norwich until 1996. Production was then moved to Nestlé’s Fawdon facility near Newcastle, where it has been since.

In 2022, Nestlé confirmed it was planning to close the Fawdon site and move production elsewhere.

According to the BBC, Nestlé said in a statement: “We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ taste buds.”

The Caramac name is a combination of ‘caramel’ and ‘Mackintosh’, as the Mackintosh company originally created the vegetarian-friendly, cocoa-free bar.
