Crop yields in various parts of Europe and North Africa have resulted in a shortage of tomatoes to UK supermarkets.

Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium said: “Difficult weather conditions in the south of Europe and Northern Africa have disrupted harvest for some fruit and vegetables including tomatoes.”

However, he played down the impact saying: “Supermarkets are adept at managing supply chain issues and are working with farmers to ensure that customers are able to access a wide range of fresh produce.”

The shortage comes just as the NFU, president Minette Batters, warned that time is running out for the government to back British farming.
