Supermarkets in the UK are lowering the prices of hundreds of essential food items in a bid to keep costs down for customers this summer.

Sainsbury’s have introduced their own ‘Nectar’ points scheme and Morrisons have announced their sixth round of price cuts this year as supermarkets go head-to-head to win customer loyalty.

M&S, Aldi and Lidl have also lowered the prices of staple products including bread, butter, milk and cheese, targeting cupboard essentials to ensure savings.

Waitrose and Asda have both cut their prices in an effort to reduce the cost of peoples’ shopping baskets during the current cost of living pressures. You can read about these on the Food Management Today website.

David Potts, Morrisons chief executive said: “It’s been a tough year for many families who find themselves stretched. To play our full part in feeding the nation, we’re cutting prices and holding them low to make our food more affordable for everyone. These are not short term promotions – these are price cuts that are here to stay.”

Alex Freudmann, managing director at M&S Food: “We’re determined to keep up the pace for our customers. Our value perception is at its highest point in six years because we are relentlessly focused on price with no compromise to the magic of M&S Food – our market leading product quality, innovation and sourcing standards.”
